Located off of Highway 160 in South Fork, Colorado the Carnegie Library, South Fork Branch has always been a branch library of the Carnegie Library in Monte Vista since it opened on February 7, 1975, however, it has not always been called by the branch name. It started out as a small library called the Ruth Tabor Memorial Library located in the North East corner of the South Fork Community Building located on Highway 149. Ruth Marie Tabor is credited with being the one who set in motion the procedures for starting the library. Ruth was born in Independence, Iowa and served as a librarian in Olwein, Iowa for 27 years. She came to South Fork after her retirement from a lengthy career that included being a member of the Iowa State Legislative Committee for the Iowa Library Association. Ruth Marie Tabor passed away in the early 1970's before the library was opened. The library was named in her honor as a hard working, friendly woman whose interest and time consuming labor made this library possible for the people of South Fork. The name was officially changed to Carnegie Library, South Fork Branch in 2003.

Because of the growth of the library in the past years, a new library building for South Fork was built in 2007-2008. It took several years of planning and fundraising to start the building process. Moving the small library from the South Fork Community Building to a new building all its own was a difficult task that included a lot of hard work on the part of library board members, library staff and many volunteers. The library took up its new residency on January 11, 2008.
